It will offer start-ups access to GCHQ personnel and expertise to develop ideas for innovative products to prevent and combat security breaches and threats, with applications open until 17 October and the centre due to open at the start of the new year.

Chris Ensor, deputy director for cyber skills and growth at GCHQ, said: “Cyber security is a team sport and as threats become more prolific and more complex, we should be sharing our experiences and views because there’s so much we can learn from each other.”

Meanwhile a second innovation centre is being set up in London, which the government said would open in 2017.

DCMS is contributing £50m over the next five years to work on the innovation centres.
