Oxford NHS trust digital chief sentenced for fraud over false degree claims

Senior manager given suspended prison sentence

The former chief information and digital officer of Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has been convicted of fraud, after falsely claiming during his job application that he possessed a degree.

Peter Knight held the senior management position for two years before resigning in September 2018. His departure from the trust came following an anonymous tip-off, and an investigation that found his HR file did not contain the degree certificate that he had claimed to possess.

Appearing before magistrates last month, Knight plead guilty to fraud. 

At Oxford Crown Court last week, he was handed a two-year prison sentence, suspended for two years, as well as 30 hours of rehabilitation and 200 hours of unpaid work.

Sue Frith, chief executive of the NHS Counter Fraud Authority, said today: “Today’s sentencing of Peter Knight for fraud against the NHS is a reminder that the law and the rules apply to all in the NHS. Anyone who obtains an NHS job through lying is committing fraud. Any suspicion of fraud against the NHS should be reported via our fraud and corruption reporting line, either online or by telephone."
