The Government Legal Department (GLD) has created a senior role to oversee the organisation’s ongoing adoption of a “location-neutral hybrid working approach”.

The approach is outlined as part of a wider Accommodation and Location Strategy published by the department, according to the job advert for the new post of ways of working programme manager. As part of its plans, the legal unit “aims to capitalise on the opportunities presented” by government’s Places for Growth initiative, through which thousands of civil service posts will be relocated outside London. 

For its part, the GLD will be largely moving its staff to “a small number of hubs… including Leeds and Bristol”.

This work – which will be overseen by the new hire – will involve “creating offices for collaboration and teamwork, [and] workspaces designed for collaborating, socialising, wellbeing and learning and development”.

Other responsibilities of the role will include “maximising the opportunities for career development and progression in all locations” and “supporting managers to lead dispersed teams whilst maintaining and inclusive culture”.

“The new post will have responsibility for programme-management of the delivery of GLD’s location-neutral, hybrid working approach” the advert added.

The position is at grade 6 on the civil service’s pay scale, and comes with a salary of £63,734. The successful candidate will join an organisation of 3,000 people, two thirds of whom are legal professionals.
