A new centre dedicated to developing the Chief Information Officers (CIOs) of the future is being formed at City University London, in recognition of the role’s growing influence in business and policy-making.
The formation of the Centre for Information Leadership coincides with the unveiling of the Government’s Digital Britain report into Britain’s place at the forefront of the global digital economy. This places the CIO at the centre of delivery, yet fails to mention how they will be developed to fulfill this crucial role.
The issues facing CIOs involve cost management, workforce, environmental, corporate responsibility and ethics, business processes, strategy, innovation, competitive advantage, outsourcing and offshoring, IT governance and legal compliance making up just part of the workload. The CIO must therefore play a central role in shaping business strategy and government policy.
“There is currently no centre in the UK that aims to bring an interdisciplinary approach to the development of CIOs, supported by truly independent, evidence-based strategy and policy work,” says Dr Andrew Tuson, Head of Computing at City University London, who has created the Centre.
With the approach to training and developing CIOs and other information professionals often fragmented, the Centre will offer a clear and consistent centre of excellence to safeguard the profession’s future. Information professionals are vital to the competitiveness of the UK as around 55% of the UK’s productivity comes from technology intensive sectors*.
The Centre will sit in the University’s School of Informatics but will draw upon expertise from the University’s world-ranking Cass Business School and its City Law School, as well as in the disciplines of social sciences and arts.
A high profile director is currently being sought to lead the Centre to drive and develop research networks, learning markets and funding sources, and run a series of events that develop a university and industry-wide understanding of information leadership upon which to build collaborations. An external advisory group will allow the Centre to draw upon the views of key stakeholders from industry and government.
The Centre will provide short courses, CPD, Doctorates research and consultancy. In 2010, the Centre will launch a masters degree in Information Leadership designed for experienced information professionals.
